"You got passed by a girl, " said the slack jawed yokel at PIR

Has anyone gotten Candi to approve the new age-bibs required to separate boys and girls from men and women in adult cats? And just think how humiliating it is for 16-year-old Susannah to be called a "woman" or 14-year-old Brian Jr a "man" by those insensitive spectators. Ouch! I think they need therapy now. And how will the promoters deal with the newly-required "Cat A Women and Girls" and "Cat B Men and Boys" definitions?

somebody asked me "what does the fox say?" as he tore past me. I didn't
know what the fox says until I watched this:

enjoy!

THAT'S probably what I heard during the Women's race - Go squirrels!" "You

It has All ways been a sports bar where have you been wait till you are a nearly 50 year old sweeper in the master A's I always get passed by women... And they always say you got passed by a GIRL... How non PC... At least I have a view! Wait till you don't have a costume for the Halloween race! Be prepared to be ripped a new one...

I have been racing in the A's and then the masters A's for at least 20 years and I love this sport and am not great at it at all but I love the comradery and support I get within the pack especially from peeps like Decker, Wicks, Trebon and Tonkin... It will not be same when I demote myself to the 50+ next year...

A great thanks to the A pack!

Impressive, though. Totally reminded me of Jens Voigt riding some kid's little yellow bike to stay in the Tour. Maybe your picture will also make it to VeloNews.

I propose that at the next board meeting we make an approved list of
cheers and heckles.
While we're at it, we should probably make a list of approve halloween
costumes so no one gets offended by some cretin wearing a Wonder Woman
outfit or worse!

If you ask me even the "stories of being passed by incredibly athletically gifted women" are missing the point. I got passed yesterday in the single speed race by women who had just finished the women's C race and were out there racing again five minutes later. I don't need to sooth my pride by telling myself or others how exceptionally gifted they were. They were faster than me.

All this talk about how it's OK to be passed by a world champion is insensitive to those of us who are just plain slow. :-P

And while we are on this topic, I'd like to add that "Good job" is in no
way shape or form an acceptable race cheer. That's what you say when you
kid goes poop on the potty and not in a diaper. Examples of acceptable
cheers are:

* You are *killing* it (must rise to the level of enthusiasm required to
pull this one off)
* You are awesome
* Woooooooooo!!!
* Ride faster (can be punctuated with actual racer name if known)
* Don't let that guy catch you
* You better catch that guy (said to person chasing the above)
* Do *not* stop running (said to people walking instead of
running/jogging/shuffling)

While some of these border on heckles, they have been proven to motivate
even strangers to go noticeably faster when applying them judiciously and
with volume.

You are welcome.

To be on the safe side I practice Heckling Equality, and just say "stop
sucking so bad" to everyone. That's the most common encouragement I myself
hear while on the course, and I've never once been offended by it.

Shouting "you got passed by a girl" IMPLIES inferiority. One would not say "you got passed by a _____ (insert any number of racial, cultural, gender, etc stereotypes)". In fact, if you were to say something like that to wrong person you might get roughed up.
+1 for being pissed by that behavior. Good on ya for standing up to it.
Heckling's fun, but putting down a class of people while doing so just illustrates one's ignorance.
Finally, if its not nice, dont say it.

The first time I was "passed by a girl" was the 1988 Mountain Bike World
Championships hillclimb at Mammoth Mountain. It some girl named Cindy
Whitehead. Sometime later, we had sushi together and discussed the
shifting problems she was having with her new bike. I've been passed by
lots of other girls (and women) since then. I don't get too worked up over
it.

Tom / all,
I am 64 and still dealing with “stuff” I learned when I was a child. The world keeps changing....and in my opinion mostly for the good with regard to equality for all. One of my inspirational moments with regard to women in sports was watching the top level athletes and camaraderie of the PSU Women’s Volleyball teams in the 70s-80s. Individual / teamwork greatness at work.
There are women that CRUSH me in Cross and MTB. That is how it should be. They are faster. Gender means nothing in these situations unless someone chooses to make it an issue. The good is that the people who see a boy / man getting passed by a girl / woman, might end up changing their perspective if someone speaks with them about it.........or they will eventually fade away and be replaced by younger generations who do not see it as an issue at all. When I have helped with the kiddie cross races (and short track), it has been inspiring to see girls smack down the boys and all of them just be fine with how it went down in general. It was some of the parents at times that were a little bent if a girl beat a boy. Most parents of young ones now are totally fine with boy /girl both being winners. I believe your daughter will thrive because she will hear many more positive comments than negative when and if she chooses to race a bike.

Pretty sure this issue wasn't getting heckled, but rather one of content. I, for one, don't look forward to the day when I have to explain to my daughter why some people think she might be a second-class racer. If more people stand up and make that kind of heckling unacceptable, maybe I won't have to.

Mike,
Maybe they were talking about your advanced age, not how you were racing.

I have been passed by lots of girls and women. Turns out they were faster then me. Girl, women, guy, doesn't much matter. Seems like this would only bother someone who thought being a girl is somehow inferior. In every race there is only one person that isn't passed by someone.

Actually, I don't see heckling in cross as much of a problem. Actually just the opposite. I did a cross race this year and as I rode by, firmly in last place, people kept yelling "Your looking good Mike". The dishonesty was disconcerting.

I wish I were a tenth the racer that Serena Bishop is. I want my kids — boy and girls both — to be inspired by grit and grace like that.

I just found my epitaph.

True that! I’ve actually heckled spectators in those occasions. “Looking good Paul!” “Heck no I look like CRAP. You call that HECKLING?” Shame me into passing, people!

Hey Gomer,

Since your mama didn't give you brains or teach you any manners, let me
fill you in on a little secret:

female 0-17 years = girl
female 18-100+ = WOMAN

The WOMAN who passed me was Serena Bishop, and I salute her for her fitness
and bike handling skills. Since you are too impotent to get upgraded to
the A's, I suggest that you shut your hole. We are both faster than you.
