My question is regarding the effects of extra weight while riding up hill.

I was 20 lbs. heavier this year over last year and it had predictable

results. A particular hill I climbed last year at 12 mph now has me reduced

to 8 mph. This strength to weight ratio is easy for me to understand. What

I don't understand is why tandems, ridden by 2 good climbers, can't climb

the same hill anywhere near as fast as they could on separate bikes. The

tandem weight may be just over double the weight of the 2 separate bikes,

but I don't think the difference is enough to make them climb so slowly.

Does it have something to do two bikes being 'glued' together and climbing

is awkward?            Also does this play out if you had a 3 seater and a 4

seater and so forth. Would they just get slower and slower?

I'm just wondering if anyone has tackled this topic before.

Thanks

Pat
