I did not find an answer about the 'top end' of a tandem on a flat
surface. I notice that a tandem can move up to 25mph rather easily but
I have not seen many that can maintain speeds into the thirties. Is
this an issue with severe wind resistance that the combined wattages of
both parties cannot overcome?
I was wondering if two champion TT riders have ever doubled up and
beaten the single bike TT records?
........
I'm not sure what the current record on the Old Peoria TT course is, but
back in the early '90s Russell Morton and I (Larry Smith) teamed up and
rode a 50:29 for 40k. I can't quite remember if Karl Maxon did a solo
time faster than that or not. I do know that all three of us were at
various times in our careers National or District TT champions. At the
time Russell and I rode we were both over 40yrs old and Karl was under
30.
And climbing in sync is a lot more than just pedaling together....and
it's a lot more than just riding a lot to learn how to stand
efficiently....anyone truly interested in learning the nuances of tandem
synchro riding...write to me directly, rather than bore the rest of the
OBRA group...
A bientot...riding and smiling near Alp d'Huez France....
Larry
