OT: buying a car

Personally I'd stay away from
reconstruction titled vehicles, it's not often what you think.
Yea, sometimes it was simply a car repaired after an collision and
that "might" not be so bad (depending on the quality of the repair
work).

But it is very common these days for vehicles to turn up here on
the west coast after they were totaled out by insurance companies
from the hurricanes on east coast (Sandy) or south (Katrina).

Common problems that result from these vehicles being submerged in
salt water include:

  • internal engine and other drive train component damage that
is not detectable without an expensive professional inspection

  • long term problems with wiring and control corrosion

  • mold and mildew of the interior that is easy to cover up for
a short time but impossible to eliminate

With so many decent vehicles out on the market these days you
should not feel compelled to go for the false economy of a
reconstruction title. It might wind up costing you far more than
you think in the long term.

I am looking for a decent used car and in scanning Craigslist I see the phrases "reconstructed title" and "clean title." Does anyone in OBRA-land have experience with a "reconstructed title" car? So far, I've seen only one ad where the seller shows a picture of the "before" as well as the "after."

Reply off-line and help further my education.

Have a safe and sane Thanksgiving.

Thanks.
