Hi-

Just want to check in with OBRA-land with my current recovery status (hope this doesn't seem too self-serving!).

A recap: I had a "human hammerhead" mishap on 6/12 (whew...glad that wasn't 6/13 (a Friday...), fracturing my pelvis in two places (left side) and breaking my left elbow.

Now, I'm almost walking unaided ("Citizen Cane").

Today was my first ride on the road! Yesterday I had tried a turbo trainer for a 10-minute easy session with ok results, but I stopped another intended session because of discomfort. Today my endurance felt better, so I couldn't resist an actual ride!! It was wonderful going through the checklist of ride readiness (bod not the least of concern). The first few feet were a bit wobbly as I tackled the modest incline on my quiet street. The climb up Dosch Rd to Fairmount was epic, with legs cooperating as tandem partners (left leg requesting the right to do just a little more of the work). One lap of Fairmount, a 40mph descent on Dosch, and I'm as pleased as if I just learned to ride for the first time.

So, no racing for quite a while, but I'm back, as from dark ages to a renaissance, dodo to phoenix.

Thanks to all who have sent good wishes, as words can be so very healing.

David

Hi, I'm back home from the hospital, with an official OHSU waterbottle here at hand. Wow, it's been a very different six days, kind of a deluxe pajama party... I have a great admiration for nurses, multi-position power-beds and x-ray rooms with 16th Cen/21st Cen decor, but it's sure nice to be out of the bustle into my quiet piano room (now a bedroom)!!

(My OHSU room did indeed have a magnificent West Hills view...)

Thanks a lot for all the kind words! My typing skills are a tad slow right now, so let me pop this simple note to all, in appreciation for everything.

I won't be on a bike for quite a few weeks, but it's a very important part of me that will get re-connected.

I hope you all will race Tabor on Sunday, June 29. Bruce and TRC are doin' it all for YOU!!

OBRA Land,

You may or may not have heard that local legend, fashion trendsetter, and fixed-gear evangelist David Auker had a serious mishap at the track last thursday. Today a few of us that he routinely destroys on "friendly little training rides" went to go visit him in the hospital. He's got some new titanium parts in the arm, and the pelvis is going to take some time, but his spirit is already showing rapid recovery. Rumor has it he may be able to go home tomorrow. This is an especially good thing because his room has a great view of Rivington Drive, and I think seeing other cyclists tackle that climb in the nice weather is making him restless.

I'll try to find some kind of huge get-well card we can sign at Tabor and Alpenrose this week. In the meantime, please keep sending good thoughts his way.

Thanks for reading,

Peter Drake
