My son was 10 last year and did the Sisters Stampede and Pickett's Charge with me. I raced in my own category and let him go out on his own. I was somewhat concerned, (honestly, I was really concerned, and had all kinds of scary scenarios in my mind...) but he did great and had a blast. I don't think there is anything wrong with shadowing your kid, but I have to wonder if that is ultimately what's best for both of you? In other words, we don't need to rush our kids into racing before they are ready. I mean, if they are psyched and motivated and ready to go out for a 12-mile ride by themselves at 10, let them rip, otherwise, maybe give them some more time to practice and ride trails with you until they are ready?
Also, keep in mind that the folks who are way back in the pack of the beginners category who your son will be racing around tend to be a pretty friendly, helpful group.
Good luck, it's rad to see the growth in junior cycling in Oregon!
