Horse Trails at Tryon State Park

Feel free to start attending NWTA meetings like the one at 7 at The
Lumberyard. We support any access issue members want to participate in.
Tryon is a tough nut to crack.

Here's a place to start building that argument:

I can assure you that the impression you mentioned is anything but old. I
sit next to someone at work very active in the horse riding community and
making trails for horse riding, and while he agrees that most mountain
bikers are respectful, he still has a negative view of mountain bikers
based on the few who aren't following the rules.

My understanding is that this is based on an old impression of mountain
bikes as destroying trails and terrorizing pedestrians, an impression
currently held by both the Friends of Tryon Creek and the Friends of Forest
Park. Thus we are not allowed to ride in Tryon at all, nor are we allowed
to ride anything other than the Firelanes, Saltzman and Lief, etc. in
Forest Park.

Hopefully as systems like Sandy Ridge hold up and become examples of what
respectable cyclists do with well built and well managed trails we can
argue for more access.

Yes it's odd, as in their brochure it says :

"The trail surface is packed gravel, which can support horse traffic even in wet weather."

So the comment about erosion really doesn't hold.

thanks for calling them, appreciate it, however, that organization is not the park service, just an independent group. I'll call the park itself and get the word.

thanks, Ryan

Yes, but I'm referring to the multi-use horse trails - not the hiking trails. I haven't seen a clear answer anywhere.

*Bikes are not allowed on the hiking trails* as they erode and destroy the
trails. A paved bicycle path follows the eastern edge of the park.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the official word on if the multi-use gravel trails (horse trails) are open to bikes at Tryon State Park? According to the signs there, there isn't any indication that they aren't allowed, they are designated multi-use and horses don't seem to use the trails much if ever.

I rode them a while back on my cx bike and hikers on the trails were polite as well.

Thanks, Ryan
