Just one mtb/road promoters opinion:
Part of the problem with the quick posting of results is that every racer gets/wants a time, not just a placing. Several years ago when I put on the Mudslinger we did results by hand and that sucked. A spotter would yell what number was going to finish and then another person would write down the number, while a third person wrote down the time. A whole 'nother crew would take pull tags, so we could reference them. When a sheet would fill up we would hand it off to the spread sheet guy and his crew would try to figure out our scribbles. Lucky for us we were a college club team and we had enough people to pull this off and a few days later (long nights after classes/jobs) we posted results.
This year (as in years past w/Pickett's) we hired a guy named Doug Clevenger to do our timing. It was awesome! Results are done minutes after the last finisher, not to mention the constant posting of up to the minute results. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth it. The stage race results were a little slower coming, but overall it was a quick process.
As far as fees go, mtb races aren't that much more expensive than road races if you pre-register, and they take way more time to put together (exclude road stage races, I've never done one of those). Promoters usually have to deal with multiple land owners with multiple fees (Mudslinger '00 had 3 land owners plus a county permit).
One last thing. I got 2.5 hours of sleep over the Pickett's Charge! weekend and my right hand helper didn't get much more. I'll gladly pay $25/$30 entry fees to mtb race without questioning why it costs that much. Thanks for reading and race my stage race next year!

Why are we compelled to pay higher fees, at least a week or two in advance (else we get slapped with another fee), and yet the races don't start on time, are all too often poorly marked, and typically don't see any results for nearly a week afterwards? Myself and others have really been questioning our continued participation given the rising level of frustration. The courses have become less challenging, the pre-reg/late fee is crap and undefensible, the stranglehold of the Trek/VW series has squashed the willingness on many potential promoters from stepping forward with new events.
As racers we need to be willing to expect a worthwhile product/experience given our commitment of time and money. It has nothing to do with type A or B personalites but rather a reasonable expectation of fun and satisfaction. Simple economics will be the downfall of XC racing. Just look at the attendence figures over the past few years and it is apparent that something is not right.

I agree with you entirely. I do not understand why your mountain bike people are so patient to wait weeks to see the results. The road side tries very hard to publish the results at the event and on the list by the same evening. Of course we do not always get every rider but I do not see any reason why the mtn side cannot do the same thing. You have to pay in advance to race, can't send your entry fee in 2 weeks late, why do you have to wait 2 weeks for results?
