Dropping out of XC mountain bike races

I know the race directors have a lot to tell the riders, but maybe at the
start of the race a reminder can be given. I for one appreciate the time
spent on checking in each rider to make sure no one is lost or hurt on the
course.

Thanks for the efforts!

Thanks Jon for the reminder. We had 7 riders that did not finish the race at Bear Springs that never came to let the finish line know they did not finish. This happens at every mountain bike race I have ever worked and it makes the race promoter and officials feel uneasy even though we always have a sweep.

ALSO, please do not cross the finish line if you did not do the entire course. We had several riders cross the finish line even though we were radioed that they DNF'd. We then had to seek them out and confirm that they did not complete the course! Makes results a bit more challenging....

Thanks for being out there!

If you run into an issue at a mountain bike race and cannot finish please make sure to tell the folks at the finish line that you did not finish before you leave the race venue.  Course sweeps go looking for missing riders when they don't go through the finish line or let the officials know that they dropped out.
It is easy to forget about notifying the finish line or chief official when you've spent 30 minutes walking back to your car after breaking a chain or destroying a wheel but it really helps out everyone involved in putting a race when they are able to account for everyone out on the course.
Thanks for everyone's help and see you all at the races, Jon Myers
