Many of you might know Bob Bergdahl, a racer that comes over from Idaho to race at Alpenrose. You also might be aware that his son has been a POW in Afganistan since 6-30-09. Today the good news was announced that Bowes release has been arranged and soon he'll be coming back home.
Something that captured me into this whole story from the day I met Bob was the amount of compassion that was surfacing through this injustice. Bob was racing on the track with a big beard. He started growing his beard when his son was captured. He wanted to understand the mindset of his son's captors in the event he would have the opportunity to make some appeal to them for his sons release, so he started obeying the laws of Islam without sacrificing any of his own beliefs or values. The captors themselves had no ill will towards Bowe. They kept him in a remote village where if he attempted escape he would again get captured by the local populace. That event played out at least once, so they went back to locking him in at night, but otherwise he was more or less just a guest of the community and allowed to wander around freely. I'm sure much more of the story will be coming forth once he's home and can speak freely. I for one, am eager to hear more.
