I have been a race organizer for many many years. I have yet to make a profit and have never paid myself for my time and effort. Organizing a track race is even more difficult because of the limited entries possible and the cost of officials and medics. This is an act of love of the sport.
Not many of us race for the prize list. If you do, you can ask for the prize distribution at the time of registration and make the decision whether you wish to compete. At the end of the event the riders should all thank the volunteers, race organizers and officials. Anything other than that is just bad form. Shame on anyone who has complained, especially if you do it to the sponsors of the event.
My 2 cents
Candi

Subject: [OBRA Chat] A Big Thank You from the PDW Omnium
Thank you to all of you who came out for the PDW Omnium this weekend. We ate every hot dog and hamburger that we brought and finished off six gallons of ice cream. We also had some great racing in between all the root beer floats. A big thank you to Portland Design Works for bringing all the food and prizes out to keep everybody fed and entertained.
Results have been posted here: http://obra.org/events/22686/results
There seems to be some discord over the prizes and payout. The elite fields were paid cash, equally for the women and men. This was based on the number of entries in both of the fields. Had we had more entries for the day, we would have had a larger payout. Portland Design Works supplied prizes for the top three finishers in the masters, category 3 and 4/5 races. Those were handed out with parity as well, the womens fields and the mens fields received the exact same prizes. If there are any questions about this, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,
Clint
