Staley Captures Gold at Jr. Worlds
MOSCOW (August 20, 2003) - Larssyn Staley(Beaverton, Ore.) captured the
gold medal in the women's 20km points race Wednesday at the 2003 UCI
Junior World Track Championships in Russia. Staley unfortunately crashed
in the final corner of the final lap of the race and was transported to
the hospital where X-rays of her back were taken.
Staley had already accumulated enough points earlier in the race to
secure her victory despite the crash. Her total of 35 points were enough
to win the rainbow jersey over Agne Bagdonaviciute (LTU) who finished
with 33 points for the silver medal.
Earlier in the evening, Aaron Kacala (Racine, Wash.) rode to a 16th
place finish in the men's kilo. Kacala posted a time of 1.07.208 for
1,000 meters. Filip Ditzel (CZE) won the event in 1:04.094. Team USA's
Rocco Mazzei rode a 1:09:144 to place 24th in the kilo also.
The men's 10 km scratch race set 28 riders on the rail of the 333 meter
track. Christopher Remaly (Glen Gardner, N.J.) finished 19th for Team
USA.
The 2003 Junior World Track Championships continue through Sunday.
Thursday's schedule will include the men's team pursuit, women's 500m
time trial, and men's keirin.
