BTW, I sent a note to Velonews complaining that Larssyn didn't even get a mention at www.velonews.com. She is the first U.S. women to take this title and she doesn't get a sentence?!? Previous winners of this title (such as Ina Teutenberg, Hanka Kupfernagel, Sarah Ulmer and Olga Zabelinskaia) went on to great pro careers. U.S. World Champions in cycling are rare and our leading domestic publication should be paying more attention, don't you think?

LARSSYN CONQUERS THE WORLD!!!
Staley Captures Gold at Jr. Worlds
MOSCOW (August 20, 2003) - Larssyn Staley, the
youngest member of the Genesis Scuba/FFCC womens
cycling team, captured the gold medal in the women's
20km points race Wednesday at the 2003 UCI Junior
World Track Championships in Russia. Her historic ride
marks the first time ever that an FFCC member has won
a world championship.
The race was highlighted by Larssyn's powering away
from the rest of the competitors and lapping the field
and gaining enough points along the way to gaurantee
her victory. Staley unfortunately crashed in the final
corner of the final lap of the race and was
transported to the hospital where X-rays of her back
were taken as a precautionary measure. Although she
was in pain, she is expected to compete in the pursuit
later in the week.
Staley had already accumulated enough points earlier
in the race to secure her victory despite the crash.
Her total of 35 points were enough to win the rainbow
jersey over Agne Bagdonaviciute (LTU) who finished
with 33 points for the silver medal. Laura Telle
(Latvia) captured the final podium position with 27
points.
