It's about time ! However it doesn't go far enough. We ought to register
and tax Shoes as well. Transporting by your own human power is no longer a
right, it's a privilege. And it costs money to clean up after
"accidents". Plus with the state provided health care, we can't allow this
sort of dangerous activity, Well at least I refuse to pay taxes for someone
else's medical costs from getting hurt when partaking in what I consider a
dangerous activity !
For those that insist on walking or have to do it for their jobs, we
really need to add training and then arrest people that aren't carrying "I
am a trained walker" card. I am sick of pedestrians walking across roads
built for cars and trucks. While we are at, no one should be allowed to
walk without wearing safety vests or lights or at least neon yellow
clothing. And if children aren't lit up like Christmas trees, their
irresponsible and stupid parents should be arrested and thrown in Jail... :
) I definitly know what is best for you! I am just trying to keep you
(or your children) safe.
it's a Slippery slippery slope.

Thanks Joe for the inspiration and foundation for what I sent to Senator
Boquist at:

sen.brianboquist@state.or.us

Dear Senator Boquist,

I am strongly opposed to Oregon Senate Bill 551. I believe that it is an
outrageous attempt to defund bike projects as it proposes to create a
bicycle transportation "fund" out of the registration proceeds. This is
another ploy by the legislature to generate additional revenue that will
only target those who truly depend on bicycles for basic transportation,
and families who will have to put up with unfair fees on people who just
want to have some recreational fun. Don’t over-regulate cycling. Find
something else to over-regulate, link computer bloggers –

The thousands of members of the Oregon bicycle community will watch this
issue closely and hope that you will reconsider your actions. Thank you
for your consideration.

And as an elected official, don’t forget to use some common sense.

Joseph A. Field

2015-02-04

Kenji has alerted us to an important issue. In response, I have written a quick follow up letter (see attached) to our esteemed State Senator. Feel free to copy and paste from my letter, or use it for your own inspiration. The important thing is to take two minutes of your time to send off a quick email expressing your opposition to Senate Bill 551’s proposal of an Oregon bicycle tax. Please try to get a few friends and family members to do the same. Thanks, Joe

p.s. In case you read my attached letter and are wondering, I’m an independent voter, so I can bash politicians from both parties!

All of OBRA-

Please contact Sen. Brian Boquist in opposition to Senate Bill 551-
especially if you are a business owner.

This senate bill proposes to have mandatory registration of all
bicycles- including bikes that aren't used on the road. That means
cross bikes, mountain bikes etc. If you ride in a park, only on Sandy
Ridge or trails- you'll have to pay a yearly tax.

This includes kid's bikes. The only exemption is for tricycles. So
if you have an Isla Bike, a Skuut or a Strider you will also be forced
to register your kids' bikes.

If you sell your bike, whether on e-bay or give it to goodwill you
will be forced to report it to DMV.

This is really an attempt to defund bike projects as it proposes to
create a bicycle transportation "fund" out of the registrations. The
net is that the cost to operate a registration will likely exceed the
revenues which means the transportation "fund" is a farce.

Note this is different from SB 177 which is the one that was submitted
on behalf of a constituent. This new bill is moderated from SB 177
which indicates that someone is working the concept more than being on
behalf of a constituent.
