I just returned from a 10-day self-guided bike tour around Northern Thailand, starting and ending in Chiang Mai with my wife and 2 older daughters, and it was a great ride. It was through an outfit I had not previously heard of (clickandtravelonline.com), and I was skeptical about navigating in a country where I couldn't read the signs and where no one in the rural districts spoke a word of English (plus they drive on the left). It turned out to be super cool, low-stress and not that difficult to get where we needed to go. We did over 400 miles in 10 days on mostly small-scale rural roads through tiny villages and lots of rice paddies. Navigation, as it turned out, was a snap with the instructions provided, and the bikes (Trek 3900 mountain) were perfect given the diversity of roads we covered. Plus the price was very reasonable (~$32/person/day, including good lodging, all equipment and detailed directions). If anyone is considering such a trip contact me, and I would be happy
to share my views and advice on this one (dan@reevekearns.com).
