Beaverton to PIR

The key is making it past downtown by 5pm most days. After 5pm it is a much bigger gamble by car as traffic can snarl anywhere and the best method of getting there can change daily. I leave from the Washington square area around 4:45 most days I race and make it to the race around 5:15 to 5:45 on bad days. If I leave right at 5pm it is much more likely to change that to between 5:45 to 6pm or even later.

Primary reason I drive vs ride is that I want to get home sooner, otherwise it is silly to drive an hour to get there and then warm up for 30+ minutes when I could just ride and get there in 45 minutes and warm up along the way and leave much later.

I check the traffic cams before leaving, but almost always jump off I5 just before the 405 or after depending on which way you go. With no one to carpool with I prefer to take Greeley and Denver (by the Addias headquarters) to get to the race after a bridge. Getting through the city center is just a nightmare and I try to handle that by leaving early. Taking barbur vs I5 can help some days and not others, I prefer to avoid 26 as that bottlenecks pretty fast and I take taylors ferry to I5 or 99w, then get off as soon as it looks bad - sometimes taking the Morrison bridge via barbur/99w and downtown, sometimes I5 and sometimes 405. Hwy 8 and 10 are other ways to avoid traffic, but they get bad pretty quick as well, but if you are in Northern Beaverton you don’t have much of a choice. Burnside is another route to try, although I have never taken it during rush hour.

Hope that helps.

I rode from SW 158th and Walker to PIR a couple weeks back. It was around 16 miles. It took me around an hour or so. You could spend that much time driving, easily.

Newer to the city, and I want to race PIR. However, I know the traffic can be horrible going across the hills and toward Vancouver. Question is, based on your experience, when do I need to leave Beaverton to make it to PIR by 6? Is there a route that isn't 26 to 5 that's a better bet? Do I have to just suck it up and ride to the race (mildly sarcastic, but it would leave me a bit beyond warmed up).

Thanks.

Bike to the MAX, take the MAX to PIR; I think there's a stop right next to the raceway.

If you're on the north end of Beaverton, it can sometimes be better to take Germantown to St Johns.
