Cycling in Death Valley

Here's a riding deal:

Please consider this...it's a great kick-start to '05 miles!

If you want to do it, please respond soon...

Happy New Year,

==Death Valley Supper Tour==

Sunday December 26th to Sunday January 2nd

Furnace Creek Group Campground

Furnace Creek, CA

Come and join us in Death Valley for a challenging week of mid-winter

conditioning. Death Valley is an amazing, wonderful place with crystal clear

air and incredible vistas. As ever, our main focus will be cycling. There

are miles of gently rolling terrain on the valley floor, and good climbs to

the east and west. We will also want to explore some areas on hikes and

mountain bikes, and one day we'll devote to visiting The Racetrack in the

remote northwest area of the park.

The challenges are many, as we learned last year: it can get cold at night,

and at elevation. We doubt that it will be quite as cold as last year - that

was pretty unusual - but one must come prepared. (At least one good thing

resulted from that experience: it made any winter riding back home very easy

to tolerate.) Darkness comes early, although this year there will be

moonlight for most of the week. We have various options for fending off the

early dark: nightly Ranger talks, Scrabble games, Go games, campfires,

perhaps a trip to the bar at Furnace Creek Ranch or the Inn, and the

swimming pool. In fact, the non-chlorinated pool at the F.C. Ranch should be

considered a great resource for cross training at any time of day. It's fed

by a hot spring that flows at a rate of a million gallons a day (if I

remember correctly). It's a great resource!

The cycling should be excellent. We'll have a general aim to average 50

miles/day, although multiple centuries are a possibility. The weather is

likely to be sunny and warm in the day and cool to cold at night.

We are calling this "Supper Camp" for good reason: the fare created by Sarah

Auker is well known by those lucky enough to be on tours where she has

cooked. Nourishing, delicious, and flavorful all are terms that aptly

describe her dinners. Forget cycling: some folks just come to be fed for a

week! Breakfasts will alternate between oats, eggs and potatoes, and

pancakes. Peets coffee, light lunch fare, after ride snacks and sodas, are

included. It will be up to you to ride enough not to gain weight!

Here's Sarah's menu from one night last year:

Almond Cabbage Sesame Chicken

Rice with Flax and Red Lentils

Tofu, Millet, Vegetable Soup

Green salad tossed with Annie's Greenhouse Dressing and Sunflower Seeds

There is a limit of 35 riders. At this time Byron has not committed himself

or his magic bus to the camp.

When: from supper Sunday December 26th to breakfast Sunday January 2nd.

Where: Furnace Creek Group Camp, Death Valley, California

Cost is $325.

HI, OBRA!

Welcome New Years Day '04 with 110 miles! This is starting to fill up, so if you want to go, respond now! Contact Bill at 415-269-0591 or cfcy-@yahoo.com

This is a good opportunity for a decent mileage dosage to start 2004 (minimum: 460 miles/8 days). It's a long drive from Oregon (a LONG day), but doable. One "big" problem is trying to find enough time and energy to do some hiking in addition to the riding, because those side-canyons are pure magic.

Hope you will consider attending! Thanks for reading, David

New Years 2004

Death Valley Supper Camp

Friday December 26th to Saturday January 3rd

Furnace Creek Group Campground

Furnace Creek, CA

Join David and Sarah Auker, Byron Feldhake, and Bill Dunn for 8 days of cycling, hiking, and camping in Death Valley National Park. This will be a great way to top off your year's mileage tank, transition into 2004, and explore one of our grand National Parks. We will have suggested rides each day, including some mountain biking and hiking options. Swimming at Furnace Creek Ranch is another possible option. Showers are available there for a $2.00 charge. At night there will be Ranger talks, scrabble, go (an ancient Chinese board game), star gazing, and tall tales of cycling prowess. Bring your bike lights; if we think it's safe, we might do a night ride or two.

The cycling should be excellent with lots of gently rolling terrain on the valley floor, and good climbs to work out on into and out of the valley. We'll have a general aim to average 50 miles/day, although multiple centuries are a possibility. The weather is likely to be sunny and warm in the day and cool at night.

We are planning on expanding the traditional ST fare. In addition to our beloved oats and coffee (available on early days) we will plan on breakfasts, alternately eggs and potatoes, and then pancakes. Light lunch fare, after ride snacks and sodas, and - of course! - a delicious dinner. It will be up to you to ride enough not to gain weight!

There is a limit of 35 riders. David has spilled the beans, so-to-speak, and told his friends in the Oregon Bicycle Race Association about the camp, and there has been some early interest.

Byron will drive the bus from Concord if enough riders want to go with him. There will be a small extra charge. Contact him at 925-682-9233. For other questions contact Bill at 415-269-0591 or cfcy-@yahoo.com See you there!

Cost is $300 for 7-8 days.

Hi, OBRA!

Start your '03-'04 winter training with an 8-day week of 460 miles (50 miles/day, with one 110 miler).

Currently in planning:

December 26 - January 3, Death Valley. A great place to ride, lots of gently rolling terrain on the Valley floor, with some 1,000-2,000' popper climbs and also "sky is the limit" ("temperature is the limit?") climbing. Artist's Palette, Mud Canyon, Dante's View, Scotty's Castle, Badwater (-280'), Dante's View (5,475'). Hiking possibilities.

Sarah Auker will be cooking - the food will be great. She has cooked for many Super Tours, of which this is an offshoot. Breakfasts, light lunch, hearty dinners.

Cost not yet determined, but it will be reasonable.

We'll be camping at Furnace Creek, likely for the entire week, so there will be only one setting up/tearing down. Nearby pool, store, museums (with nightly programs). Likely warm enough for riding in shorts, but can freeze at night. Lots of stars!

Think about giving yourself that well-deserved break from riding fendered fixed gear on wet NW streets, and log in some sunny miles in Death Valley - a unique scenic area, where you can ride below sea level viewing Telescope Peak (11,049').

More info forthcoming - let me know if you're interested!

Thanks for reading, David
