I have ridden from San Diego to the tip of Baja. It's about 1100 miles. I
did it with a group as an un-supported tour in about 1989. It's the best
touring experience I've had. I thought it was a blast. There is primarily
one main road that you can take until you get to La Paz. From there you
can take the western route or eastern route. When I did it, we went over
Christmas and New Years. It was a 2 1/2 week trip with three planned rest
days. It rained in La Paz, so almost all of us stayed there an extra day
and rode to Cabo San Lucas in 1 day, rather than 2. When I did it, we
stayed in motels every night, except for two, when we camped. Hotels
varied in quality, but I'm pretty flexible. I still have the 'booklet' we
were given when I took this trip. My trip was the 14th (I think), in a
row, for the ride leader. Let me know if you want more info.

Anyone ever cycled in South America (Chile, Argentina etc...) or do you
have recommendations for
another cultural cycling experience. Here is what I am looking for:
1. Less jet lag the better.
2. Good value for my money. I want some nice hotels and good food but do
not want to
pay $150+/night to get it.
3. Experience another culture.
4. Good-safe roads for riding.
