Theft of Yakima Rack

Thanks, John - now I know how old my Yakima locks are, because all of them still have numbers on the front. Well, they do until I take them off, thanks to this discussion!! Just never thought about it until Brian brought it up!

Yep, mine was a Thule. I never meant to imply they were the same, just a word of caution. I should have mentioned the Thule part.

I work at Yakima. Our key codes are on the face of the key and the barrel of the lock cylinder. You can't see that one unless you remove the cylinder from the housing which you can't do if it is locked. We have had this system since 1993.

Jordan. You're not inciting an OBRA riot (the riot with more cowbell!!) but some Yakima and Thule locks absolutely have a number, matching to the key number. I just looked. ALL of mine do. Maybe they stopped doing that since I bought mine ... I keep stuff as long as it still works.

I know we have Yakima employees on board who might not want to give ideas away, but I'll bet Yakima doesn't use all 10,000 possible number combos.

Anyway, it's simple enough to remove the numbers on my roof box, rack and cores, I'll do that to at least annoy and slow down the thieves. So I'm glad for this conversation, some of my racks are worth as much as some of the bikes on them.

Not to keep this thread going or insight and OBRA riot but some miss information have been stated.

The locks DO NOT have key codes on the face or any visible spot of the lock core so very unlikely my theft was related in this fashion. Also there are so many key combinations with the 4 digit codes I find it hard to believe they had my correct key.

Bottom line, it was a calculated theft and they won a used rack. My point in posting was to share with everyone who reads this that I thought I was all good with the lock provided because who steals hitch racks but clearly I was mistaken and too confident with my surroundings.

True dat. There is only a handful of different key combinations
for those racks. The thief may well have had a selection of them
in their pocket and they were simply trying their luck.

To everyone with a hitch mount rack system be careful
and the locks provided with any system are not enough.

I had the same thing happen. In my case, I think the thieves went to re-rack and simply got a key. The key # is printed right on the lock for anyone to see. When I replaced my rack I bought a new lock core and filed the number off, and wrote the number in a safe location in case I lose the key in the future.
