I've also had very good luck with Continental's Gatorskins. I commuted all
last winter with them and had zero flats, even though I'd often run over
gravel and glass and hear it grind around inside my fenders. They offer a
nice ride for a winter tire, too.

I too can attest the amazing durability of the Armadillo tire!
I had a set on for almost 3 seasons pocked with holes and rips and did not
sustain one puncture! Pulling the shards of glass and crap was just a
formality.
While the ride quality is less than ideal it beats flatting in the cold and
rain
making you late for work or worse...hypothermia!

Due to the ice and snow the sanding trucks have been diligent to sand most
of the highways all over the state of Oregon this past week. It will take
months for the sand to be blown off the edges of the roads we ride on. That
sand is made specifically to offer rubber tires a good grip in the snow and
ice. In order to provide that level of traction the sand has razor sharp
edges to grip the ice and rubber, thus the multitude of flats for the next
few weeks.
The point of this note is to warn and remind people you will see group rides
being stopped frequently for flats. Carry plenty of tubes and even a patch
kit (make sure the patch kit has fresh glue). If someone in the group flats
check your tires for embedded gravel-glass that has not punctured yet. When
you get home, take a few minutes to carefully check your tires for razor
sharp gravel-glass. The gravel can usually be dug out with a small
screwdriver, or carefully with the tip of a knife.
