Velodrome committee update

Tom Orth

2017-06-01

I just want to add that, as a participant in some of the track events and a
fledgling promoter, my experience is overwhelmingly positive with EVERYONE
at the track and on the PVC. The support I have received is humbling. The
track vibes are still as awesome, open, welcoming, and convivial as ever.

I appreciate everything that all involved have done and continue to do for
the sport.

Agreed.
The 12th sounds like a good date to me, but maybe we should put a quick survey on the Alpenrose FB page and see which date works for the majority of riders?

I think calling a meeting would be good but would like a little more notice
than a few days so we can get the word out.

ok -

I had thought that an email from Candi regarding plans for a meeting had
gone out to OBRA chat. It had not. My last note was based on that
assumption, so my apologies if it seemed I was brushing off the notion
of a meeting. I do think we should clear the air, and not on OBRA chat
or on Facebook.

We are planning on a general meeting. It needs to be after the 11th.
Martinez's daughter is graduating on the 10th, and he can't come sooner.
He needs to be at the meeting in person.

I propose that we meet at the track on Monday, June 12th after the short
first session of the six day. If a weekday won't work for people, we
could try Saturday the 17th or Sunday the 18th.

Although I think that Adam's note was unnecessarily harsh and probably
represents more of an example of the problem rather than a solution, I agree
that this stuff is not of much interest to most people on the general OBRA
list. There is a list specific for velodrome issues which would be more
appropriate, track@list.obra.org. Those interested can join that list at
http://obra.org/mailman/listinfo/track.

When there is a date and location for a general meeting it should be
published to both lists as well as to social media sites, signs at the
track, etc. to assure that there is general participation.

that no one particularly cares or wants to hear about the details
surrounding the interpersonal disagreements on PVC.

Pick a date for a meeting (I propose this Sunday after PDW Omnium), get the
ridership there, and take a vote on what they want to do with the committee
positions moving forward. Get this nonsense off of OBRA Chat, it's not
productive.

Just to clarify:

Matt Martinez will be here June 11th, and has been up here several times
to fulfill his duties.
Mike Murray is still involved.
The duties of the scheduling coordinator has for the most part been
fulfilled for the season.

I am not arguing against a meeting. I'm just saying that there are not
only two of us fulfilling the duties.

I would think that you would want a meeting to back-fill the positions soon. The PVC currently has only 2 members that reside in the city of Portland. A third member I know has plans to move north. However, that date is unknown at this time. Even with three, its a lot of work. A larger group helps mitigate issues that would arise due to illness or injury. Or even just life events like Weddings , Graduations or Births. The duties placed on these two individual will most certainly burn them out at the current workload. If one is rendered incapable of pursuing these duties the organization would be scrambling for sure.

Secondly, a larger, more representative and distributed committee also reduces the risk of abuse of power. Not that I feel either of these issues are occurring or imminent. Its simply prudent for an organization to protect itself from those outcomes.

Thanks,

John ..

I agree with Robert; there needs to be another meeting by all velodrome stakeholders, to include all those who race at the track and want to be involved in the future of Alpenrose. This is more than your typical turbulence, as both the Track Director and Events Coordinator resigned within 30-days of each other, so we need to hold open elections for new interim replacements.

I agree Candi and Mike have done a fantastic job pushing the track forward, building a strong track community, and I am very grateful for that, I love them to pieces but with AVC looming, the PVC needs a full team to make that happen to its full potential.

Hey guys
Just wanted to send out a quick note to let you know what is going on
with the track committee.

First off, I believe that Alpenrose has been and continues to be one of
the most fun tracks in the country. We ARE a vibrant racing community.
Mike and Candi have done an amazing job over the years, and our mission
this year has been to steady the boat and allow them to retire from
running the track without worry. Mike has been playing a supervisory
role to the committee the entire time. We are not adrift without
direction.

Any transfer of leadership will have conflict. We expected some
turbulence going in. This has been exacerbated by the fact that our
track manager could not get out of his job before the season started. He
has made multiple trips up here to work on the track maintenance, and
plans to be here for the season starting June 11th, working as track
manager and Chief Ref for many races. The majority of the committee has
been able to work together. We dont always agree on the small stuff,
but we are still here, doing the work of making the track go: planning
and executing a successful racing season, raising community awareness,
and increasing rider recruitment. And it is not just the people on the
committee making this happen this is the combined effort of everyones
time.

We all share a vision of getting more riders to the track, and are all
working towards making that happen. There is no argument there. Racing
numbers are down across the country. That is a common denominator for
all promoters and race organizers currently. Of course we all want more
people to race track.
The vision that we all share is keeping Alpenrose the awesome facility
that it has been and continues to be.

The transition has been challenging and we are working through issues.
We hope to work with everyone to bring more people to the track. We are
here to have fun riding and racing our bikes!

Thanks,
Jen
