Velo Motion
International Cycling for Understanding, a new Portland non- profit, is
looking for host housing volunteers for cyclists visiting this summer. An
informational meeting will be held at 6:00pm on Friday, March 19th at
Velocraft?2034 NE Sandy Blvd. Portland, OR 97232. Feel free to contact me
with any questions on 503-235-8445 or email velo_m-@hotmail.com. If you
are interested in hosting feel free to attend the meeting and ask any
questions you may have.
Many of you may remember Adam Curry from New Zealand who rode here in Oregon
during the summer of 2003. Adam had a great experience here in Oregon, and
I really enjoyed hosting him and watching him race. With Adam?s help this
past winter I founded a non-profit organization to sponsor 18-23 year old
cyclists who live in countries below the equator. Because their winter is
our summer, it is a great opportunity for these cyclists to come to America
and train for a few months in the ?off season?.
ICU riders will be racing together as a team in many OBRA events this
summer. Hosting is a great way to get involved with an amazing athlete and
give a young person from another country a great experience in America.
This is our inaugural season and we have limited our recruiting to Australia
and New Zealand.
While we have placed some cyclists with host families in Portland already,
we are still looking for a few good hosting situations. Housing is still
needed for:
May 9 ? August 6
3 Cyclists
July 10- October 8
1 Cyclist
ICU riders are males aged 19-22, and are all national level cyclists in
their home country. They have been selected after a lengthy application
process including references, essays, and telephone interviews. For
housing, they will need:
1.) A warm bed in a private room
2.) Access to a bathroom
3.) Some cupboard space for food and access to a kitchen
4.) Help getting their act together in the US including help with meals,
shopping, and transportation
The best hosting situations will be those located within a 20 minute bike
ride of downtown Portland with close access to public transportation. ICU
will be visiting hosting volunteers prior to making final decisions on
hosting arrangements.
Regards-
David Nute
