Wow, I got lots of help on this. Thanks!! To answer a few questions that
were raised, I do have a set of Shimano 600 brakes to put on. I want it to
coast because I'm giving the bike to my 9 year old son for his birthday.
It's a 44 cm frame I think. I don't know exactly what type of hub is on the
bike now or if it has threads for a bmx cog. So I'll take it down to the
local shop and let them examine it as well as put on the brakes. I can
manage most things, but with my boy on this bike I want to make sure it's
very solid.

You need a single speed freewheel. They are commonly available for BMX and
SS mtn bike use. If you have a "flip-flop" hub, the side with the single set
of threads (rather than two sets of opposed threads) is the side the F/W
goes on. You might also consider getting brakes.
This all of course begs the question... why? Descending a good hill in a
60-some inch gear is a bit humbling at first, but it eventually gets easier,
and it'll do wonders for your pedaling technique. (I'd recommend brakes for
this too)
