I agree with Matt, nothing worse than being blinded on the way to work because someone happens to look your way as the say hi.

It seems like more commuters are using lights that are better suited for 24hr racing events. These lights throw out a huge amount of light 700-1400 lumens in a broad conical pattern, right in the eyes of oncoming riders and drivers. Unless your commute takes you thru Forest Park on Lief Erickson during the winter this is just overkill and inconsiderate to everyone else. If you are lighting up the street signs and the lower branches of the trees then your light is too powerful and/or pointed the wrong direction.

I stopped using battery lights after the having to send my Li-Ion battery back to NR for the third time. There is nothing so disconcerting as when the 15min reserve light comes on with 30 min. left on the ride.

My current set up:
Schmidt Dynamo hub
Supernova E3 Pro headlight w/ the glare free lens
Supernova E3 Pro tail-light
PDW Danger zone flasher on my backpack to catch the attention of weary drivers.

The headlight gives me plenty of light and puts it on the road where I need it not in the eyes of oncoming traffic.

I have been using a pair of serfas true500, one mounted on helmet as a spot and the other on bar as a flood. I like how small they are, they recharge using mini- usb (can use the same cable as the garmin), and you can get spare batteries. With this setup, my post-lasik 40 year old eyes are able to see potholes in unlit streets riding at cruising speed.

for those rides that go a little later than expected. I do not really

care if it comes with rechargeable batteries because I would probably

I like my helmet mount Light and Motion brand "Cabeza Logic" light.

Simple, lightweight, bright when I need it, and has three power settings

ranging from about 2-6 hours burn time. Good quality cord/plug

connnections. Bulb life is extended as it "trickles" gradually from off

to on (talking fractions of a second here).

Great for singletrack, especially looking around corners and checking

out challenging terrain. Ideally you pair it w/ a bar light too, but if

getting only one, go for the helmet mount.

lights and light combinations (helmet + handlebar). The best thing is they

have great photos of the lights in action so you can get a really good idea

of how they are going to perform.
