Dear Cyclists,

Thank you for all of the great information. This will really help us

look at the bump outs with an objective eye. On the road in my

neighborhood (Nevada St.) we currently do not have a bike lane and

would not gain one with this plan. The traffic calming plan is in

response to a new subdivision opening up with only one access road

(Nevada St.). The route is on the way to an elementary school so

pedestrian safety has to be a major factor.

Please let me know if you think of anything else we should consider.

I am also looking into accident rate reports on streets with newly

installed traffic calming devices vs before the devices.

I am looking for information on Curb Bump Outs or "neck downs" and

bicycle safety.

The city of Ashland is planning on installing these "Traffic Calming"

devices on several major bike routes throughout the city. Bump outs

calm traffic by narrowing the road to just wide enough for two cars to

pass each other. The reasoning seems to be that this creates a

dangerous situation and therefor traffic will slow down.

Is anyone on the list aware of any studies on the effectiveness of Bump

Outs, and how they effect cyclists? Or do you have suggestions on where

to look for this kind of information? I have googled for this and just

get Ashland's and a few other towns plans for doing this, no

substantive information.
