My perspective as someone who has come to the sport rather recently (2013
is when I first joined OBRA, I think) is that the reason there isn’t much
draw for a “state champs” race is that there really doesn’t seem to be much
more to it than any of the other races of that type. The only real
difference is that the winner gets to buy a jersey.

If the championship race was either a) a qualifying event for something
bigger, or b) the culmination of a series of events that are all taken into
account somehow when determining the champion, then I think it would be
much more meaningful as an achievement.
