I take issue with the characterization regarding how disruptive I was.

First, I was a bit shocked to find out that after we were told to arrive

no later than 9:30 (I arrived at 8:30) that I was expected to start at

12:30 for 50+ and 1:40 for Cat 3. At the time I said nothing. Upon

investigation, I found out that part of the reason was that large blocks

of open times were vacant to allow for late registration and that we

were proceeding at one minute intervals.

Since our team runs the District time trial, I attempted to point out

that they could advance the system by eliminating some of the open

blocks and by moving to more standard 30 second intervals. What I

received instead is a very emotional response from the woman, who

screamed at me to go away. At that point, I offered to help them

reorganize the times, and I received another very emotional response.

At that time Tom showed up and of course, without any prior knowledge of

the circumstances, decided that I was being disruptive because the woman

handling the registration could not take the stress of doing something

she had never done and was being very emotional.

I think it is reasonable to be offer constructive commentary on how a

race is organized, particularly if you have experience on organizing

one, can offer a better way to do it, and can help improve the

situation. I was not particularly pleased with being screamed at, which

was the time Tom showed up. I was not disruptive, I do have a right to

express my opinions in a normal manner, and organizers need to keep an

open mind regarding suggestions particularly when they have a mess on

their hands. Frankly, I cannot be held responsible for someone's overly

emotional state. I have never experienced someone that overwrought at

registration.

I did have a reasonable conversation with Michael O'Hair subsequently

(without Tom's assistance) and there was no great uproar.

I was not planning to get into this, but since Tom had to start using

names and impugning people's character, I suppose I have no choice.

If we want to get into the correct way to run one of these, all riders

go at 30 second intervals. All riders have to submit an e-mail notice

that they intend to ride no later than Thursday, and a schedule is

issued Friday with no open times. On Sunday, those that did not pay

their money can pay, execute a release and check in, those that paid by

pre-registration do not need to check in at all. If you have not

notified the organizer by Thursday that you intend to show up, then you

get put at the end of the list no matter what your category. That way

everyone knows when they start, and people do not have to hang around

all day. Also, given traffic concerns, it is a good idea to get

everyone on the road and off as early as possible, as the longer a TT

goes the more traffic there is and possibility for conflict with

motorists increases.

Dear OBRA list, Estacada TT organizers/promoters and officials,

Since I already posted to this list once today in SUPPORT of the

organizers of the TT, I am upset that my company's name was used as

sponsor of the team when the scene was created by individuals. I

understand that sponsors want to get the good press from a team, and

thus may also get bad press, but why mention the team name when the

individual is to blame?

I have contacted the individuals and the team management to ask

them to respond to the race promoters. I, for one, think this should go

off-line if we want to encourage sponsors to continue to pay teams for

the 'privilege' of advertising on uniforms.
