Can anyone tell
me if the time trial course goes from Promontory Park towards Estacada or
southeast away from Estacada? Is the course fast, or undulating /
challenging? Anyone have a topographical map showing the elevation change?

Thanks, Scot

Scot,

It goes southeast away from Estacada. I haven't seen a topographical map but this may help you.

First 5 miles - Starts very fast - over the first mile the course drops around 100' and then is pretty flat until past the 3 mile mark where you gradually gain back that 100' to the 5 mile mark. On a scale of 1 to 4 with 4 being the hardest, the first section is a 3.

Second 5 miles - This section is easily the toughest - I give it a 4+++. The first 1.6 miles will remind you of the early parts of Dairy Creek Road and the last .4 miles are as hard as any section of the Dairy Creek TT course. I went to my small ring and was having a hard time holding 15mph. Over this section you gain appx 200'. For the next .7 mile you are gradually losing less than 100' and then you have a relatively flat mile. You cross two bridges which is very pretty. From mile 8.5 you gain around 100' going into the wind and then the course is pretty friendly to the turn.

Third 5 miles - This section is very easy and fast - easily a 1 on a scale of 4. There were sections where I was easily going 30mph on my road bike while riding on the hoods. There is an initial small rise where I was still able to hold 25mph. The only tough section is the .7 mile gradual descent that you had on the way out(starts around the 12.3 mile area). This section along with the .4 mile on the way out(mile 6.6) are where you will either post a great time or suffer. Once you crest this hill you are treated to 7 very fast miles to hte finish. I think speeds of 40mph are attainable.

Home stretch - The last 5 miles are also very fast. There isn't quite the loss of elevation as the 3rd section, but it was still pretty easy to hold 27-28 mph on my road bike. The last 1/2 mile includes a little rise to a slight descent for the final 200k. Sprint if you have anything left.
