As you may have surmised by now, Chris Browning and myself [Dan Houghton] have picked up the dropped Swan Island Classic Criterium. It's a race I have personally enjoyed and I didn't want to see it disappear so I'm putting it on the line again to promote Oregon racing. Because the former promoter of this event recently "bailed" we don't have a lot of time to organize things like sponsors. By reviewing last years flyer for this event, I can see who the sponsors were in the past but I don't know who the contact people are. Thanks to Robert Burney's recent post, I figured out who Corbin is. I still don't know who Huntair is.
My point is, I called Robert to find out what kind of support he and his partners have provided for the race in the past and if they would like to do it again. I was told that because of the recent bad press they have gotten on this list they are not inclined to support cycling. Who can blame them? I would feel the same way if my business name was associated with bad behavior real or perceived. That's less prize money / swag for you. I understand that wearing a sponsors name on ones jersey behooves one to behave at a higher level in public than one might ordinarily in private. That's why when I'm out riding in my team jersey I make sure to stop at traffic signs and restrain my middle finger when honked at [unless I'm wearing my old Emerald Velo jersey - KIDDING!]
Do you think you will see Corbin / Huntair emblazoned across racers hips next year? That is now in serious question. Sponsors read these posts!
I just wanted you to know that there are real, tangible consequences when you throw names about when you can just as easily say "un-named person on un-named team who knows who they are".
Once words are out there, accurate or not, they have power. Use your power wisely.
Dan Houghton.
P.S. If any of you sponsors out there want to contribute to the Swan Island Classic, there is an opening...
