Augusto,

I think that Dan just made a mistake on who's comments were who's (or

whom's?). The way these threads go, it's sometimes difficult to figure out

which message is from the sender, and which part of the message is the

forwarded part.

While we're at it , I'll throw in my two cents on the tires. As far as the

tubular vs clincher debate goes, I've ridden and raced on Continental,

Vittoria, Wolber, Tufo, Clement, Veloflex, and Vredestein tubulars and

have found them all to be excellent choices. (I currently train and

commute on Continental, Vredestein, Hutchinson, and Bontrager clinchers).

I've always felt much safer and in more control, when I've flatted on

tubulars as opposed to clinchers. The lighter weight, and IMHO, better

ride and handling of the tubulars are added benefits that justify the

extra work of gluing them on. The key is gluing them on properly. I know a

lot of riders use 3M's Fast tach, but I prefer the clear glues from

Continental and Vittoria. Disposable flux brushes are my choice for

applying the glue. Haven't rolled one yet! (Knock on wood).

Let me be the first to inform you that you can and I have rolled clinchers. Only once, but I have the scars to prove it. Most of my tires are clinchers, they're easy to work with and cheap but there are advantages to riding tubulars and so that is why I use them for racing.

I'm glad you've never rolled any tire, it saves skin.

tubular had everything to do with two things, cost and hassle.

I am sure that you will find that professionals are still relying quite

heavily on tubular tires for the best in tire performance. Look closely at

photos of Lance Armstrong's bike. TT's and mountain stages are ridden with

tubular tires and I have most noted that he's got Veloflex tubular tires on

for those critical stages. Hand made, cotton cased, real rubber, tubular

tires.

Beloki's crash was not, so far as anyone I know, the direct result of a

rolled tubular. The rolled tubular was no doubt part of the outcome of his

disastrous moment trying to stay up will cornering through a sun baked, and

boiled, hot tar spot, in the middle of a right hand bend on a steep and fast

descent.where he lost it. That's bike racing, no the fault of tubular tire

technology. There is a reason that professionals use tubular tires for big

races, even when the tire is not supplied by an official sponsor or supplier

of the team!

Personally, I not only prefer tubular tires for racing, but have had way

more sketchy moments on clinchers when they pop at speed. Clinchers never

roll off rims and tubular tires do? You will then find that the rim quickly

finds the road surface, and one finds oneself "surfing it" just to stay up

on the flat, not to mention the fright of a decent when this happens. I have

had the pleasure of both situations on both types of tire technology. I'll

take tubular tires EVERY time. Note the comments of any track rider along

this thread. No difference in how they ride? I would characterize the

difference as comparable or analogous to a two ply car tire and a steel

belted radial. Which solution do you want to apply for racing tires? Have

you ever tried to ride a flat clincher anywhere? You can ride a flat tubular

that has been well glued for an indefinite number of miles, if you have to.

The tubular tire is the best technology for speed, durability and safety,

particularly when they are well glued and fitted to the rim as designed and

intended. In fact, I believe tubular tires at the high end are made better

than ever and more durable than they have ever been. I have ridden quite a

money and a lack of technical competency when setting up the tubular

right hand bend on a steep and fast descent…where he lost it. That’s

bike racing, no the fault of tubular tire technology. There is a reason that

professionals use tubular tires for big races, even when the tire is not

supplied by an official sponsor or supplier of the team! </span></font></p>

tires for racing, but have had way more sketchy moments on clinchers when they

pop at speed. Clinchers never roll off rims and tubular tires do? You will then

find that the rim quickly finds the road surface, and one finds oneself “surfing

it” just to stay up on the flat, not to mention the fright of a decent

when this happens. I have had the pleasure of both situations on both types of

tire technology. I’ll take tubular tires EVERY time. Note the comments of

any track rider along this thread. No difference in how they ride? I would

characterize the difference as comparable or analogous to a two ply car tire

and a steel belted radial. Which solution do you want to apply for racing

tires? Have you ever tried to ride a flat clincher anywhere? You can ride a

flat tubular that has been well glued for an indefinite number of miles, if you

have to. </span></font></p>

high end are made better than ever and more durable than they have ever been. I

have ridden quite a few to bald, with the casing showing. The only basic reason

for clinchers is money and a lack of technical competency when setting up the

tubular solution. That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong. </span></font></p>

by watching the crash during the tour. the fact is that there is no

appreciable difference between the performance of clinchers and tubulars.

the most important difference is in the safety factor. clinchers never, and

i mean never roll off the rim. tubulars do. even when they are applied by

professionals. i for one do not want to be behind you when yours rolls off.

and since i am always at the back of the pack, when your tubular rolls off i

will be forced to run over you. both of us do not want this to happen. so

ride clinchers. there is no difference.

Ditto to what Mike said AND remember Beloki was already going down due to

melted pavement so it's not accurate to say the crash was caused by a

rolling tubular- that was the effect. Cause....effect. Augusto, if you want

stay out of the crashes, [caused mostly by rider error], stay at the front

or stay on the porch. And I mean that in a nice way.

Tubular Tire Tip:

When you do purchase the sew-ups (tubulars), mount the tire without glue, pump fairly hard, and check for roundness. A tiny bit of 'up and down' is to be expected (in my observation, they just aren't as perfectly round as clinchers), but if there's a big 'wow' (probably at the valve-stem), you can take it back. Once any glue is on them, forget it!

'Nuther Tip:

Your first time gluing tires on the rim should be done with supervision/help from an experienced gluer. I use Fast Tack, two hands and at least one foot (shoeless).

If you can git yer hands on some Vredestein tubulars, I'll bet they are great. I know it seems weird/absurd that I recommend a tire I haven't actually seen up close, but I am really, really impressed with the rubber on their clinchers, and that is one of the most important atributes of a tire.

(a suggested max of 200 psi sounds like the casing of their tubulars is ...stout!)

I don't know if any shop locally even carries the V. tubulars, though...if anyone knows of a local source, speak up!

I just bought my first pair of tubular aero wheels and need some advice
