I live in Baker City. I rode the course last week, and will ride it again
today after work.
There is NO SNOW anywhere near the course, or near town, for that matter.
Campers should have no trouble, but be prepared for a cold night. We are at 3500
feet elevation.
As far as I am aware, this is NOT an OBRA-sanctioned event. It is part of a
series run out of Idaho. You do not need an OBRA license to register, or any
other license for that matter.
The course should be very dry, and sandy. There are also thorns. Some local
riders are using Stan's with normal tires with good success. DO NOT pull the
thorns out until after the race if you get any. There are some good short, steep
climbs, followed by short, steep descents. There is also one part of the
course called "the bobsled." No need to describe it further, but it's fun. You can
ride to Virtue Flats from town in 20-30 minutes.
There are plenty of hotels in Baker City. Some of the ones in town are a
little cheaper than the ones out by I-84. Plus, Baker has a really great downtown
and a very good Brewpub (Barley Brown's, on Main Street).
Come on out and enjoy Eastern Oregon. It's about a five hour drive from
Portland. Gas is cheapest near Hermiston and at the Arrowhead truck stop past
Pendleton, fyi. Oh yeah, the race is practically across the street from the Oregon
Trail Interpretive Center.
Hope to see lots of OBRA folks here this weekend!
