OBRA: OBRA Chat: Eugene HC 5/11 by time

I wondered the same thing last year when one of the cat 4/5 riders was

always in the top 5 in all of the Eugene TT. It turns out he is a very

good tri-athlete and had little or no mass start experience. I

introduced myself and congratulated him on his success.

The Eugene TT have brought out a large variety of recreational cyclists.

I ride with (or behind) some of those top cat 4/5s. I can tell you

they love riding long and hard. They would rather spend 8 hours a day

on the weekends riding than a few short hours at any race. When the

trails open up in the spring you won't see them on the road very much.

Hanging out together afterwards is also a major component of the fun.

It is a very enthusiastic and encouraging group. It is this kind of

attitude that was the basis for forming the Paul's Bicycle Way of Life

team.

In short, they may be winning the cat 4/5 field but that isn't all that

important to them.

Ability to place in a TT has nothing to do with category. In fact, TT

placing do not count towards upgrading. A TT, and particularly an uphill TT

is a good measure of power output but bike racing is about a lot more than

just power output, thank God or I would have quit years ago.

the order of placings in general, they bear almost no

relation to rider category.

some aren't and all that. But still, doesn't this seem

Good point Ken.

I'd also mention that this is a "tuesday night training hill climb time

trial" that takes a hard effort for a fairly short duration. Some people

may be really good at short climbs but inexperienced with road racing

and criteriums. This is a completely different style of racing that

doesn't necessarily require a lot of road racing experience to excel at.

Mainly: lot's of power. As far as I know, category upgrades are granted

based on results in pack style RR/Crits with a certain # of racers.

I'd like to say congratulations to those strong 4/5 riders who excelled

on the climb. Same thing to everyone else in the top 10... Way to

hammer!

I think it has to do with upgrade points that are required outside of OBRA. The guy who won GC for Cat 4, Sloane Andersen, placed 9th at the 24hr MTB World Championships in 2003 according to this site http://www.ultrafit.com/whatshappening.asp, but I guess that he would have to have a certain number of road races under his belt before he could upgrade to a road 3.

I spoke quite a bit with the guy who placed 3rd GC in the Cat. 4's and he will be racing as a 4 until he can get the points to move up.

It appears that Cat. 4 outside of OBRA is a much more competitive field because these guys must get points to upgrade.

Here's a general question for anybody who wants to

answer. Especially in light what sounds like was some

sand bagging going on at Walla Walla and Columbia

Plateau.

There are 3 "cat 4/5"'s placed in the top 6 of this

hill climb. And really only a handfull of seconds

behing Omer Kem who won, and as I recall also won the

Pro/1/2 at Columbia Plateau. Actually if you look at
