Re: Eugene HC 5/11: moving up

Mike Murray

2004-05-14

The general idea is you could win every TT you enter and not move up in

category, but only if you never place well in a mass start event. If you

place well in mass start non-handicap qualifying events you move up in

category even if you are last in every TT you enter.

Candi will be posting the exact criteria that are looked at re: points for

places, points required, number of races field size requirements, etc. for

each category upgrade. In general, upgrades are requested rather than

mandatory, in part because tracking results for individuals is not currently

possible because of the data manipulation required. Occasionally someone

will stick out because of placing and will be "strongly encouraged" to

upgrade. Rarely people are upgraded by mandate.

But.....if you have won several 4/5 time trials...(jack frost, Estacada,

built4speed) and

you have proven you can do well in a mass start race....i.e won a crit, or

even placed

in the top 5....isn't time to move up? Especially if your time trial times

are comparable

to cat 1 and 2 times? Or course we need fast guys in the 4/5's, and most of

the fast

Right?

Ability to place in a TT has nothing to do with category. In fact, TT

placing do not count towards upgrading. A TT, and particularly an uphill TT

is a good measure of power output but bike racing is about a lot more than

just power output, thank God or I would have quit years ago.

Here's a general question for anybody who wants to

answer. Especially in light what sounds like was some

sand bagging going on at Walla Walla and Columbia

Plateau.

There are 3 "cat 4/5"'s placed in the top 6 of this

hill climb. And really only a handfull of seconds

behing Omer Kem who won, and as I recall also won the

Pro/1/2 at Columbia Plateau. Actually if you look at

the order of placings in general, they bear almost no

relation to rider category.

Now I know very well that some people are climbers and

some aren't and all that. But still, doesn't this seem

a bit odd?
