Dear Mathew,

I went to Belgium last year and it was a cyclist's heaven. I wrote a

little about my trip at

http://www.voicedoctor.net/jim/gazette/2003/belgique.html . It doesn't

include all the details, but I found the ladies and men in the tourist

bureaus delightfully helpful in Ghent especially, maybe a little less

so in Bruges. I can recommend staying in peoples homes or B&B's which

were a more cost effective way to stay than in hotels. In Brussels, I

found the best deals on places to stay just walking and the Lonely

Planet had good advice on hotels and bars. The beer is splendid even

the triple ales go down a little smoother than they should at over 10%

alcohol - you may never drink Bud again. Ghent was my favorite city.

One can ride from there on trails along the canals seemingly forever

and the pubs are located right on the bike trails!!!! Incredible.

In Ghent there were two great restaurants (and many great pubs) In the

downtown area the best food I had was at De Hel. It is very small. See

the Dutch website for address and phone

http://www.gent.be/gent/vrijetij/restaura/showresto.asp?ID=94 .

The very upscale but delightful Ghent restaurant on a main canal was

Belga Queen. More expensive, very modern inside, but you definitely

need to visit the restroom and take a leak - it is an experience not to

be missed - seriously. And several of the waiters were racers.

<P>I was there last year. Unfortunately not on bikes. We spent a night in Brussels at a huge hostel that was within walking distance to an old part of town with great restaurants and some cool stuff to see. We then spent a couple of days at Brugge, which is a sweet city with cobble stones and canals all around, as well as the traditional architecture and windmills. We stayed in a Bed and Breakfast there. I'll have to dig up my stuff from last year to see if I still have the names and phone numbers of where we stayed. </P>

<P>Gimme a week or so to dig that stuff up cause my wife is out of town and she is the one who kept better track of all that info. If I haven't gotten back to you by then feel free to remind me :)</P>
