Put the shovels in the shed and the orchids in the icebox... the
SuperCup
Series is back from the dead, according to Lyle Fulkerson of the Kiron
Group.
Thanks to Selle Italia, Festina, Mongoose Bicycles and the U.S.
Cycling
Federation -- which Fulkerson said has agreed to lend a hand with travel
and
services -- America's national 'cross series is back in business for the
2000
season.
After Fulkerson announced the cancellation of the 2-year-old series at
Interbike Vegas earlier this month, he said, "There was a tremendous
outpouring
of support from racers, industry leaders, officials and the whole
cycling
community. I was really moved by what some people said and did during
this
period."
Fulkerson singled out Evan Call and Tara Morris of the USCF for their
support
of the national series. "It's hard to get big organizations to respond
sometimes," he said. "What they did was like turning a battleship around
in a
bathtub."
"The USCF is proud to support the SuperCup," said Call, managing
director of
the USCF. "Lyle has done a great job in developing an event series that
is the
pinnacle of the sport in the States. We are all looking forward to
another
excellent season of cyclo-cross racing that will culminate with USCF
Cyclo-cross Nationals."
Mark Boufford, Mongoose's director of product development, said that
while
Marc Gullickson was wearing the stars-and-stripes jersey of the national
champion, "we had a vested interest in seeing the series continue."
"We've always believed in racing, and we saw this is an opportunity
for us to
support the premier U.S. cyclo-cross series," Boufford said. "The
SuperCup
Series has produced some of the most exciting and fun bicycle racing,
and
Mongoose is thrilled to be able to help."
The revised 2000 SuperCup schedule, according to Fulkerson, is as
follows:
Nov. 4 or 5, Boulder, Colo.
Nov. 18, Boston, Mass.
Dec. 9, Chicago, Ill.
Dec. 17, Overland Park, Kan. (in conjunction with the U.S. National
Championships)
This last-minute series lacks an event on the West Coast, but
Fulkerson said
that a fifth event might be added. "Seattle, Portland and San Francisco
have
great cyclo-cross scenes and great riders," he said. "I can only say
that they
will not be left out in the future."
