NOT just Monday night PIR # placement

This is a problem at all races. Generally only about half of the numbers

are readable on camera and less by eye. The officials do a great job of

identifying people by jersey, bike color, body appearance, etc. but why do

they have to do that? The numbers are not there just to make you look

"racy". Think about what it takes to read them and then put them on in such

a way that they can be read. The ONLY place where they can actually be seen

adequately is if they are centered on the side seam with the number as high

on the chest as it will go. At some point every racer should spend a bit of

time assisting the judge at a race. This will open your eye to how

difficult this is. Of course, you should also spend some time being a

corner marshal, helping organize a race, doing set up, take down, equipment

check in/out, equipment repair, etc. Lots of work gets done to make it so

you can race. At the very least taking some care to put your number on

appropriately shows that you appreciate this.

Hello

Please direct your browser to the following url to see different types of

number placement Some are good and some are acceptable.

This is pretty similar to what the finish line video camera sees. There are

still many people with completely unreadable numbers. The farther from the

side panel/seam on your jersey the number sits, the more dificult it is to

make out certain digits.   Also, there are people who only use four safety

pins. The number flaps around and is hard for the human eye to make out in

a sprint what with all the distracting movement. Same for the video camera.

So please use more.   Thanks for the cookies tonight Susie. Yum.
