I found it quite easy to give my garbage to a volunteer AFTER I asked if
it was ok. I am sure that a volunteer would rather take the garbage than
risk it falling out of my pocket when I reach for my other food. I did
the same for my water bottle and she was happy to take it. I would do
the same as a volunteer. I did see a lot of gel wrappers and some Clif
Bar wrappers...not cool. I hope it fell to the ground on accident.

For future reference NEVER leave items in the OBRA truck expecting that
someone else will figure out what to do with it. This includes, but it
is
not limited to, lost and found clothing, sunglasses or other items,
unclaimed support wheels, water bottles, etc. Lost and found from
specific
races is the responsibility of the organizer of that race. The OBRA
equipment manager has plenty to do for the pittance that he gets paid
without trying to run down all the stuff from all the races. With 280+
days
of racing on the OBRA schedule the amount of detritus that ends up in the
OBRA truck is more than we have room to store. This is not directed at
race
volunteers as Martin probably feels right now but more at the race
organizers who fail to clear this stuff out of the truck before they
return
it.
I want to second the littering comment. Just because you are at a bike
race
doesn't mean you are allowed to litter. In fact, being at a bike race is
even more of a reason not to litter because the presence of litter after
an
event makes it much more likely that we will not be able to use that
venue
again in the future. There is no staffing for people to clean up after
you
and even if there were do you want to pay the increased costs that this
would mean? Keep your garbage in your pockets and your bottles in your
cages. If you need to eject an empty bottle to take on a new one ONLY do
that in an area where it is probable that someone, generally YOU, will be
able to gather those together like in the feed zone or at the finish
line.
Preferably keep the empty bottle in your cage or pocket. If you see some
other bozo tossing off stuff let him know what a bonehead he is AND
report
it to the officials. There is a penalty for littering in the rules. At
Mt
Hood it was a $25 fine, which was applied at least once. (Personally I
think they should be shot, daily.) Unfortunately officials can rarely
see
the rider litter from the middle of the field. Other riders do see and
they
should forcefully apply peer pressure.

We drove a sweep car and found 2 jackets, a clear and a yellow PI, I
think both around the start of the first climb, however.
Threw them both into the OBRA truck, along with the 20 or so water
bottles that must have 'bounced' out of rider's cages??!! Then there's
the countless gu packets, cliff bar wrappers,... Hey people, you're
riding in my back yard (I live in Hood River), please don't litter here!
Anyways, whoever knows where the jackets went that were in the OBRA
truck is who you need to talk to.
