I did get over to see Mike at Portland's Emanuel Hospital, and it's lucky I didn't go over too late, as he's just now waiting for his wife to pick him up. He's "released!" He looked fine, just a few scrapes on the face, and a few ribs aching (I didn't see the ribs). He's in good spirits, but kind of bummed to likely miss a few weeks of racing.



A little side-note: I was able to park in a bike parking "cage" in the parking structure, usually reserved for employees (I called ahead to arrange this). Nice not to have to lock a Calfee in a precarious location! The security guards operated the lock on the cage itself, so there was a little wait, but it wasn't bad at all, and the guards were cool about bikes, talking about their favorite places to ride!

I just talked with Mike on the phone. He sounded great, with one of the major complaints being an absence of good coffee. He looks forward to soon getting back on the bike (easy).



I got through to him easily by calling Emanuel Hospital, 503-413-2500 and they connected me to his room, #4511. I think you can also dial direct: 503-413-1337.



He mentioned a probable release later today. If he's there at noon, I am going to try and stop by. I think the visitation would be fine, but you might check with him to clear that one!~



Mike's quite a guy, with a beautiful family. Great to hear he's on the mend!

Sorry again for the blank e-mails. Don't know what the problem is. Hopefully third time's a charm...either way, this will be my last try.



Mike is still at Emmanuel in Portland tonight, but all looks good. He has a concussion, sore ribs and shoulder, and the cuts and bruises one would expect from head-butting a guard rail at 30mph. Actually, Mike was able to break the fall with his face, so it's difficult to tell exactly what his injuries are. The hospital will do an MRI tonight. Unless they see something unexpected, he will go home Tuesday.



I don't usually speak for the team, but in this case I am comfortable saying all of us from Hutch's thank the race and support staff for the care Mike received. We also thank our fellow racers for your support and concern.
