The Nestucca Route is sweet but still the easiest and fastest route from Hillsboro is Hwy 8 out of F.G. to Hwy 6 to Tillamook.

Carlton to Beaver is one sweet road! I did it last September, from SW

Portland I flew down Hwy 99W to Newberg, then west to Carlton. Two miles of

not-so-bad gravel, and miles and miles of a little twisting road along the

Nestucca River. Any road to the coast will have likely headwinds...

roads in state with zero cars.

I always ride Hwy 8 out of Forest Grove thru Gales Creek then intersects Hwy 6 to Tillamook. It has to be the easiest and fastest way from Hillsboro. Has a great shoulder, only one climb of significance and a screaming downhill (can we say draft semis).

The road from Carlton goes up to McGuire Reservoir and then down the Nestucca. I haven't ben on it for several years, and the last time I was, there was a stretch of fairly good gravel road pretty much in the middle. I think it's pretty ridable with a road bike, but I'd go recon it before taking anyone with me. I've ridden Hwy 18 all the way to Lincoln City without incident, and like Hwy 26, it's got a great shoulder. If you want a scenic route, Hwy 22, along the Little Nestucca is a really pretty road.

I haven't ben on it for several years, and the last time I was, there

was a stretch of fairly good gravel road pretty much in the middle. I

think it's pretty ridable with a road bike, but I'd go recon it before
