More: Knee pain rule of thumb

Mike and OBRA land,

While we're on the subject, I have another knee question. I just switched

to the larger platform Ultegra pedals from a Shimano SPD type road pedal. I

am having some pain on the outer right side of right knee (left knee is

fine). I adjusted the cleats to match my foot position as with the SPDs,

although the SPDs seemed to float more freely. I have also noticed pain on

the left inside of the knee at times, but I'm guessing its from me trying to

compensate or shift position and force the pedal to float. Any suggestions?

Thanks Much, Dave

Other way around John. Anterior knee pain is generally from the

patello-femoral mechanism. If the saddle is too low this means that the

rider but force across the patello-femoral mechanism while the knee is in a

more flexed position, i.e. there is more strain. So, if the pain is in the

front RAISE the saddle. I have attached a brief file on the subject of

cycling knee pain.

I seem to remember that there's a rule of thumb regarding knee pain.

Something like 'pain in front - saddle too high' or somesuch. Does anyone

have it handy? I'm tweaking a newbie's setup and they are having a bit of

front knee pain.

Thanks

-John
