The reason Jan and Tyler lost less time than it would appear is because the
tour organizers fixed it this year so that the fast TTT teams wouldn't put
too much time on the slower ones. Placement, not time, is all that matters
this year. Second place team loses 20 seconds whether they actually finish
one second or four minutes behind the winners. Third and fourth etc. lose
another 10 seconds each down to about fifteenth place, and then they only
lose 5 seconds per place. Last place team loses less than three minutes
regardless of the time. Big incentive to win, but it can be like a rest day
for the other teams; once they're two minutes down, they can coast in and
rest up for tomorrow. However, all riders do still have to make the time
cut.
