From what I understand, the city and county are already aware of this issue. Last year at the second annual renewed Larch Mtn TT we did infact have tacks thrown in several places along the eastbound bike lane/shoulder. We also had a near accident of rider and pedestrian when two riders racing up the wrong side of the road to avoid the tacks nearly hitting a pedestrian out walking a stroller containing his 2 year old daughter.
Both of those issues were addressed in our community/race debriefing. Working with OBRA officials to remind riders of their responsibility to follow the rules of the road when not actually racing helped emphasize to racers that it only takes one or two people to violate a race permit and put future events in jeopardy. When you are on a bike you are an ambassador of our sport to the community whether warming up, racing, or cooling down. That said though, the community - just like OBRA - was upset that the actions of one (or even a couple of) rogue members could adversely affect their reputation. City and county officials were notified and as it was explained to the Larch Mtn promoters, the responsible parties were identified and personally addressed by members of the community, county, and law enforcement.
It is my understanding based on a conversatin today, that the community is doing everything it can to once again address this latest issue. The neighborhood association and the community safety board are not taking this lightly and are once again pursuing this. They realize that the actions of a few can adversely affect public perception which they have been working hard to better develop. While it appears some do not want cyclists or sporting events in the area, the community as a whole understands that sports, tourism, and recreation play a huge role in their economy and therefore livelyhood. They would like cyclist to continue to visit. Currently there are several events scheduled in the area among them the PWTC's Torture 10K.
Based on conversations along with discussions following last years event and the efforts of the community there were tentative plans for a 2004 Larch Mtn TT event. However scheduling issues for an open weekend initially caused us to cancel this year's event. I have had many, many people ask about and request that Larch Mtn be brought back not just in 2005, but this year as well. That said, after conversations with the community today we are looking into the possibility of a 2004 Larch Mtn event. Anyone interested in the venue or helping put this together, please let me know.

Would it be somewhat useful to contact the city/county about this? Isn't it malicious mischief or something of a crime? I saw tons of tacks on the road last year at the Larch TT. . I have this feeling it is adults and not kids. How immature.

Today I was riding the historic highway out to crown point. On the stretch Between Springdale and Corbet I picked up three thumb tacks in my front tire. I chanced my tube once, but ended up riding home with one tack in. I also passed another rider who had piched up a tack. I think this may be a repeat of the tack distribution that we encountered at the Larch Mtn. TT last summer, Be careful if you ride out there, and take at least two spare tubes, or a bunch of patches. Enjoy the weather.
