Folks.



In addition to all that's been said: lifting your lead but off the

saddle, probably more significantly transfers your weight to the bottom

bracket rather than the top of the seat tube... Also, there are a

number of riders, some pros even, that for reasons really obscure to me

insist on sticking their tails up in the air and putting their weight

on the handle bars. This may work OK under some limited conditions...

but generally it exacerbates any tendency to fork wobble, unweights the

back tire allowing it to bounce around, squishes the front tire

increasing road resistance, and puts the rider in a really awkward

position to corner, absorb bumps or holes, or maneuver out of harms

way.

Seems to me that rider position has a great to do with how comfortably

and how safely the rider descends. When coaching new racers, my

recommendations are generally to keep your weight over the bottom

bracket, keep your hands light on the bars and either up in the bend

(elbows way bent) or hands on top, elbows tucked in. Pedals should be

generally keep moving or for short periods rest in a horizontal

position so that the bike is evenly weighted laterally... outside pedal

down and weighted cornering of course.



Finally, It's pretty clear that spoke tension is often culprit in an

unstable bike... and that many riders fail to go over their wheels

anywhere frequently enough. If you're going to race, learn how to

maintain your wheels and check them before every start.

The 2nd crash on the stage was caused by someone swerving across half

the lane to try and position himself to move up in the field. He ran

his chain stay into my front wheel, and to correct his mistake, slammed

on his brakes and swerved the opposite way. Somehow I stayed up, and

narrowly missed his head when he was on the ground.



This bike swerving 'technique' was used by many riders throughout the

day, causing many more close calls.



I spoke with a couple people using this technique, who gladly agreed to

ride a straighter line and look before they move. A lot of people,

myself included, have done this from time to time and a quick word or

two can go a long way to correct the problem.

with any other rider was made, and he may not have been sitting down

when it happened either. i saw the wobbles behind and thought "he's

going down" and started looking for a line around him, when his wheel

went over hard and his bike launched him straight over the bars at what

looked like head height. it was without a doubt the most horrendous

thing that i have ever witnessed.

Whenever I am going down a descent at high speeds

and am not pedaling I clamp the top tube between my knees.

I believe this can prevent the 'speed wobbles' or stop them

I have been going over this issue for the past month. Maybe you remember my post from a few weeks ago. i heard all of the generic stuff right away,

headset too loose

headset too tight

wheel spoke tension to loose

wheel not in the drop outs squarely

frequency of pedal stroke vs. fork deflection



but i also uncovered that if the fork bearing race isn't on the fork squarely then you can't really adjust the headset correctly (i think this is a very major component of wiggly front ends)



lastly and probably most common, a wispy frame.

Whenever I am going down a descent at high speeds

and am not pedaling I clamp the top tube between my knees.

I believe this can prevent the 'speed wobbles' or stop them

I have hit 60+ and have not had any problems. Check headset, wheel true, and frame alignment. Then check your nerves so you do not get involuntary fear shakes. Oh and a good stiff bike.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] 3/4 crash - mt. bachelor stage





i was behind the rider who went down just a couple miles into the first

stage in the 3/4 race. what i saw was that this guy's front wheel began

to shake with speed wobbles (crosswinds, loose headset, grabbing the

brakes, i dont know what caused it), as far as i could tell no contact

with any other rider was made, and he may not have been sitting down

when it happened either. i saw the wobbles behind and thought "he's

going down" and started looking for a line around him, when his wheel

went over hard and his bike launched him straight over the bars at what

looked like head height. it was without a doubt the most horrendous

thing that i have ever witnessed.
