I crashed at the 3/4 race

Devlin -

I am sorry you were hurt so badly and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks for writing and sharing your experience.

I was one of the other guys who went down and have been trying to figure

out what happened. You probably read my other posts.

It looked to me like your front fork was broken and I also saw the

damaged / collapsed Rolf front wheel. I would certainly suggest you

carefully study the damaged equipment to see what can be learned. I

have heard of wheels collapsing and I think a good mechanic may be able

to tell you what happened in the case of the wheel. Maybe the fork was

cracked and gave out?

BTW, how and when did you check your spoke tension on your front wheel?

I don't want to sound like I am accusing you of bad maintenance. I am

certainly guilty of not checking my spoke tension, although I did just

have my rear wheel rebuilt.

None of us can change what happened. Let's just learn as much as we can

for the future.

Sincerely,

Steve Getsiv

Hi Everyone,

This is the first time I've sat up since the accident on Friday so bear

with me. My grammar might not be so good on this pain medication. I

heard from my good friend Clark Ritchie that there were some messages

pertaining to my crash so I thought I'd check it out.

Yes, from what I can remember, which is little, I had speed wobbles. I

have taken my bike over 50mph plenty of times and have never experienced

what I did on Friday. My wheel tension was solid, my headset was

perfect, tire pressure was checked and rechecked before the start.

What WAS unusual was the undulation in the road. I remember my bike

shimming up and down more than left and right. I moved off my line, to

get off the bad road, and the bike seemed to correct. When we started to

dip into a right turn, the bike shimmied wildly, and I was bucked over

the handlebars. That's about all I remember.

I broke my hip in 3 places, a concussion, 2nd degree burn to my spine

and right buttock, a deep gash over my right eye, 5 stitches over my

left eye, swelling on the left side of my head, and road rash

everywhere. I go to the hospital today to see if I need surgery to

correct the displacement.

I don't know what could have been done to prevent the accident. I am

very careful when it comes to the race condition of my bike and the

event happened so fast there was little time to think about what could

be done to NOT crash.

I welcome any comments.

More important to me is to thank the race volunteers(I would name you if

I were conscious when we met), OBRA, the Bend Sheriff's Department, the

Bend ER, my teammate Bruce Connelly, Clark Ritchie, Patrick Hultgren,

and everyone who has been so supportive during this frightening time for

me.

Devlin,

I saw a bent Rolf "maybe" wheel on the side of the road when we were coming

back up. Could that have been yours, and if so, maybe your wheel collapsed

on you? Just a guess.

Hope your recovery is fast and surgery is unnecessary.

Pat
