In the Casper Classic I raced in Wyoming in the mid 80s, several antelope ran out into (and ran with) the pack. THey used an artists rendering of it later to promote the race..."Ride with the Herd!" t-shirts and posters!

Once, in a race out by the Bend Airport we rode into someone's cattle drive. It wasn't a really big deal, but a bit scary until the cattle got off the road. I don't recall the race even slowing down.

Scarier though, was one Cascade when the Century Drive race started in Sunriver and about four or five miles into the race a horse that started chasing the pack on the other side of the fence jumped the fence and got into the middle of the pack. As I recall the leaders were intent on stringing the pack out and as everyone was trying like crazy to stay in no-one was particularly gawking at the scenery. So when someone started to move up in the pack it wasn't too surprising... except that the guy was a riderless horse clearly having an absolutely wonderful time in a bike race.

Is the promoter of TOW still around? No need to begin from scratch.

Roadblocks? Phil's idea is to have the race at least on the NRC schedule, if

not a UCI sanctioned race. I think if we (oregon cycling community) are

able swing this, the Governor and Earl B. would be supportive of presenting

our "little valley" to the world. Huge economic impact to any start/finish

town.

I never heard about that obviously. Everyone worries about crashing in the

race but never thinks about a stampede from cows.

Actually it happened just a couple weeks ago in the Elkhorn. A girl

chasing down the lead ladies field and myself were held up for a few

minutes as this cattledrive got a little out of control. I wasn't too

upset as I was so far off the back, but the poor girl giving chase had

nearly caught the main field and the cows which were all staying on the

right side of the road decided the grass was greener on the left side.

Ok, I had a great laugh seeing cows in the lead group of the peleton.

The racers looked like little kids next to those giant beasts. Glad they

didn't poo on them!

I wonder if that has ever happened in an OBRA race.
