The course is dead flat, with only a few slight bends and no actual corners.
Several years ago I installed marker nails on that course at each kilometer.
When we put the race on we used to paint the markers the day before. This
made it so we could find them quickly the morning of the race so we could
put a cone and kilometer marking sign at each mark. The markers are nails
with shiners specifically made for survey marking on roads but they are
pretty hard to find after they have corroded a bit. The markings are really
about as accurate a distance placement as you are going to see at any race
since I measured the course at least twice by rolling it out with a wheel,
applying a correction factor for wear of the wheel. We did this once with a
car driving at slow speed and once by roller skating the course.
Whether the organizers of this year's race will put out kilometer markers is
up to them. It is a fair bit of extra work to do.
