average gradient of PDX area climbs

Okay...

I have received some feedback on my initial post regarding a web-based Gradient page. This is what I have in mind:

1) An interactive map of Oregon (PDX, Vanc, Salem, Eugene, Corvallis).

2) User clicks on a 'region' (i.e. city...)

3) A map with a collection of numbered/marked climbs appears

4) Users click on the climb of interest.

5) Information is displayed in terms of start/stop elev, length of climb, and %grade.

As a further feature:

1) A user submits a ride by entering the route and distance

2) I will add the route to the map

Or... I will have a web-based tool that allows:

1) enter start elev, final elev

2) enter distance

3) User hits 'Enter'

4) % Grade is then displayed

Any other thoughts on this?

Call ODOT. They have a formula based on feet gained per mile traveled to set grades. I forgot specifically what it is but I suggest they know what they're doing and should be used as the "standard".

Well here's another for the list:

Johnson Creek Blvd from 92nd Ave to the top, then left and immediate right

and right on first street, then to the top. A little over a mile with an

average gradient of 14%. I think it tops out at around 20% at the top. Ouch

could and painting as I slid down. People painted the top by tying ropes to

30% is about 16 degrees. That may not sound like much but it looks

like a wall when you are on it. The steepest grade on an interstate

highway is usually 6% (~3.5?). The banking at Alpenrose is 43?

(90-95% grade). 100% grade is 45?. You would be hard pressed to even

stand on a 100% slope.

inclinometer (which reads degrees) into a percentage.

So the slope angle equals arc sine of 3576.3 feet divided by the quantity 5280 feet/mile times 9.63 miles which is pretty close to 4 degrees. 30% is about 16 degrees. That may not sound like much but it looks

like a wall when you are on it. The steepest grade on an interstate

highway is usually 6% (~3.5?). The banking at Alpenrose is 43?

(90-95% grade). 100% grade is 45?. You would be hard pressed to even

stand on a 100% slope.

probably an easy one to convert to gradient % or whatever:

Pete's Mt Rd, starting from the Tualatin River, just outside of Willamette:

One mile, 700'

(I think that's pretty close)

I found this on the web a while back:

The grade from the Portland side -- from NW Cornell Rd up Thompson Rd to

Skyline is 6.2% in almost 1.6 miles. The last 1/4 mile is an 8.2% grade.

I did some GPS runs on NW 53rd, Cornell\Thompson, some of the roads to Pittock Mansion and plotted them. It was interesting to see the profile when I was done.

Since then I had a hard drive crash, and may have lost this, but I will see if I can dig them up, and post links to them.
