6.8kg limit on track bikes?

The Olympics will be run under UCI rules. You can see them on the UCI web

site. The bike rules are in a PDF at

http://62.50.72.82/imgArchive/AboutUCI/A1gene04.pdf.

The UCI weight limit applies to all bikes. The ostensible reason for the

limit is to keep riders from using dangerously light bikes but clearly the

rule does not work since many "normal" track bikes will be below 6.8 kg

whereas a 6.8 kg mountain bike is probably by definition dangerous with

current technology. In addition, a total weight does not prohibit the use

of "stupid light" components as has been demonstrated by the recent increase

in breakage of handlebars in pro races.

USAC is moving to adopting UCI rules lock step. It remains to be seen if

this will lead to the, to my mind, stupid situation of riders adding ballast

weights to there track bikes, Cannondales, etc. For the near future this

will not effect us in Oregon much since most races are run with OBRA rules

which do not have a weight limit or any of the other dumb UCI rules.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] 6.8kg limit on track bikes?

Do Olympic track bikes have the same or similar weight

restrictions as the 6.8kg limit that the UCI imposes

on road bikes?

I was just reading the New York Times' primer on

Olympic cycling and they mentioned this specifically

in the context of track bikes. Of course they also

said that the road race will feature bikers (sic)

using "up to 16 gears".
