I realize most U.S. cyclists are not racing on
sturmey,
but for those interested--here is a sad piece of
cycling news and some important information--
c
Subject: Critical errors in Sturmey's
finalproduction
You are probably aware already that if you want to
buy a Sturmey Archer
thingy, then you are just about too late. SJSC had
three 5speed >internals
remaining Friday afternoon but probably gone by the
time you read this.
But those who've succeeeded in buying up some of
the last stock may in
reality be unfortunate anyway.
I just got one of the last Sprinter/Summit 5-speed
internals, and the
right-hand cone was incorrectly adjusted. Should
be backed off 3/8 to >5/8
turn.
And Dave of SJSC says that they have indicator rods
with red bands and
blue
bands which are the same length. The blue are
intended for the >improved
ball-locking versions released this year. Correct
lengths, screw->shoulder
to band, are - blue 59mm, red 65mm.
Either of these errors, if left unfixed, can be
guaranteed to trash the hub very quickly, and you
won't be able to get the replacement parts now!
I presume they were caused by the remaining
volunteers having to extend beyond
their usual tasks (though I'm sure SA enthusiasts
will be very >grateful for
their efforts nevertheless!).
If necessary the old red rods can be just about got
to work for the new
internals provided you add a stack of washers
outside the dropout.
