The Vernonia loop is a terrific 100 (okay, maybe 105) mile ride from NW Portland. Plenty of climbing. Check you maps, but the general directions are: Lovejoy > Cornell > Thompson > West Union to North Plains > work your way southwest (use map here) past Banks and Kansas City and over Clapshaw Hill Rd. (a short fun hill, and the steepest climb on the route) > to Rt. 8 west to Rt. 6 > west to Timber Rd. > north to Rt. 26 > cross Rt. 26 and continue on to Rt. 47 > turn left on Rt. 47 (north) to Vernonia > a few miles past Vernonia turn right (east) onto the Scappose - Vernonia Hwy. which climbs gradually for 10 miles then a great, long descent to Scappose > Rt. 30 and 15 miles back to NW Portland.

I'm planning a long ride for this Saturday and would be interested in
knowing favorite routes others have. I'm thinking 80 to 100 miles with say
5000 feet of climbing. I'd like to be able to leave from near downtown
Portland but that isn't crucial. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
